Toilet, Faucet & Fixture Repair — your questions
Usually a worn flapper in the tank or a failing fill valve. Either one lets water seep through continuously, and it will run your utility bill up quickly.
Once a year, put a little red food coloring in the tank and check the bowl a while later. If the bowl water has colored, water is seeping through from the tank and the tank ball should be replaced.
First check the shutoff under the sink is fully open. Deteriorating washers and seals cost you pressure too, and calcium build-up in the aerator is a very common cause — unscrew it and clean it before assuming anything worse.
Close the shutoff valve under the toilet. If there isn’t one, or it’s seized, shut the water off to the whole house at the main valve to buy yourself time to assess it.
