It prevents the sudden temperature swing you get when a toilet flushes while you’re in the shower. A piston inside reacts instantly to pressure changes in the hot and cold supply, opening or closing inlet ports to hold the temperature steady. On any new shower we recommend one.
Usually yes — faucet dimensions and sink openings are fairly standard across the industry. There are exceptions, so check the size of the sink opening before you buy.
The plumbing portion of a typical bath is a few days spread across the build — rough-in before tile, trim-out after. A tub-to-shower conversion with tile is usually about a week end to end.
